Hi Kelly,

Our clients sounds similar to yours. Some are eager to learn and want to integrate analytics into their organization. These are the clients that don't have the web analytics knowledge and want to have someone hold their hand. Eventually (maybe within a year) we define the process and pass it off to them.

The other group of clients tend to be a bit smaller. As such they do not have the resources to hand over the analytics process. We usually partner with these clients longer as they are growing and do not have the resources to learn about the WA process

Not all of our projects are contiguous. It is not un-common to have breaks from time to time depending on the budget, scope etc.

Thanks for the reading and the feedback,

Justin

Interesting post, but I'm curious as to the suggested shift from marketer to client and how willing clients are to learn and actively take part in analytics. I know from experience that our clients can range from completely hands-off to those eager to learn about all things digital.

Hey Matt,

When you say solution, I assume you're talking about implementing an application. We're in a unique position that we only work with Google Analytics.

Integrating software into an organization is challenging. We've heard so much about how GA is simple to install and configure... and it is. But enterprise integration is challenging even with a 'simple' application. The topics can be the subject of a book.

In general, I've found the following

1. Ask more questions than you think possible.

2. Don't assume anything.

3. Plan. Many IT departments already have their handful. Scheduling another 'non-essential' integration project is a challenge.

4. Test, test, test. Make sure you have things right before rolling out to production.

I hope this helps a bit. I'll try to write a post about the topic in the future.

Justin,

Thats a very nice and clear post on the process of web analytics, but i'm interested to know your process for actually implementing a web analytics solution rather than the ongoing activities?

Thanks

[...] Justin Cutroni had a really good post a few weeks back titled “Web Analytics: It’s About Process” that I loved. I’m still well-engaged thinking about the processes behind the successful “doing” of web analytics at the Enterprise-level and have had several enlightening conversations lately. One of my favorite comments was “people often consider “process” to be a dirty word …” Ouch! [...]
