Hi Will,

Interesting question. Assuming that all settings are correct, then the cookie deletion issue could be a plausible explanation. I've heard cookie deletion rates ranging from 5% to 40%, so you may have to believe what you wish or what will work best with your observed data. :)

I'd also check to insure that the profile only has email traffic. It could be that there are some visitors that are sneaking in through from a different medium because the links are not tagged correctly.

Thanks for the question,

Justin

Hi Justin,

I have added one of these filters to www.googleanalyticsfilters.com with reference back to you and your website. I hope this is OK. If not, please let me know.

www.googleanalyticsfilters.com is an attempt to create a central directory of user-submitted Google Analytics Filters.

Cheers,
Ken

Hello Justin,

I have a brain twister that you can perhaps provide some insight on. After creating a profile for our email customers, GA is reporting that over 50% of our visits are coming from new visitors, despite all emails are only collected via visiting our website.

In Brian Clifton's GA book, he stated up to 30% of users delete their cookies within a month's timeframe. What is your take on this?

All settings such as cookie duration have not altered.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

[...] While this change may not seem like a big deal, I think it signals a shift in the way that we think about profiles. For a long time I’ve been stressing that profiles are not websites, they are segments of traffic. That’s why we can, and should, create lots of profiles for a single website. This change facilitates that line of thought. [...]

Hi George,

Segmenting based on a sub directory is a bit trickier. You'll need to add a second include filter that looks at the campaign term. That's right, the referral sub-directory is stored in the campaign term parameter for referrals.

Hope that helps,

Justin

Hi George,

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I think you want to see the above data for a specific referring site, correct?

In this scenario you would need to create 2 filters, as I do in the above example. The first filter, an include filter, should be a filter on the medium, and it should have a filter pattern of 'referral'.

The second filter should, also an include filter, should be a filter on the source, and have a value of 'the-domain-that-you-want-to-track'.

Thanks for the question and hope that helps.

[...] For 2008 I suggest setting up profiles for all major marketing campaigns and mediums. Why? So you can segment reports that normally can not be segmented. Check out Segmenting Visitor Loyalty Reports in GA for more information. [...]

Justin

Maybe something similar to this?

http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55523

Would this solve that problem potentially?
