@Les - You need to look at every request for __utm.gif. Specifically look for __utm.gif hits that say event. Also, you may want to add a timer to your JavaScript that forces the browser to wait 200 ms while the __utm.gif hit is sent.

Hey Justin: Yes this helps very much. I have since figured out that I need to use Event Tracking - which I have implemented. For some reason though, my Events are not showing up in GA. I took a look with FireBug and GA seems to be getting sent the JavaScript. Would you mind if I posted a snippet sample for you to look at as my head is spinning from trying to resolve this.

I know you are busy with the new Google gig, so I have no expectations and will fully understand if you do not have time to reply.

@Les - No, to track mailto: links then you need to use something like a virtual pageview or, my suggestion, would be to use an <a href="http://cutroni.com/blog/2007/10/16/event-tracking-pt-1-overview-data-model/" rel="nofollow">event</a>. The reason is that mailto: links appear in an HTML page. You need to capture the visitor's click on that link.

Hope that helps!

Hey Justin,
Great article. Just wondering about using the URL tool for links such as: "mailto:info@mywebsite.com". Same concept?
Hope you are enjoying life at Google!

@Ben: You don't add the Google Analytics tracking code to your email. You add the utm parameters to the links that are in your email. Then, when someone clicks on a link in the email the Google Analytics code that is embedded on your site tracks their activity, including where they came from, which is the email.

Hope that clarifies things.

But how do you actually embed the google analytics code into the email. I am using outlook 2007 and I can find no way to actually embed the code@?

@Mmarq: Tracking a PDF from an email is a tough challenge. The problem is that there is no place to fire the JavaScript. You could try to put the JS in the HTML of the email but that is not very reliable. I would try the following:

1. Direct the visitor to some type of re-direct page.

2. On this page put a slight delay and execute the GA tracking code along with your event tracking code.

3. Then direct the visitor to the PDF.

Hope that helps,

Justin
